Localeur is a global community of diverse creatives, tastemakers, and restless travelers who seek to promote authenticity through an emphasis on local. In all the ways we strive to share our passions and pursuits with the world, our commitment to what makes a destination or a local unique is the foundation for everything we see, make, and do, especially in light of a pandemic that has dramatically impacted the way we think about travel.
Localeur was founded in March of 2013 by Joah Spearman, with help from his friend and our longtime head of content Cate Smithson, with the simple objective of helping visitors and locals alike experience the best of what Austin, Texas had to offer. The city was our backyard and a massive part of our identity; its residents were (and still are) our brothers and sisters. Austin was well into its boomtown growth spurt, and while we helped our community navigate that expansion, we boomed, too: soon, we were enlisting locals in cities like Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Miami to help establish the notion of #experiencelocal in the places we traveled to most.
Seven years and five million users later, Localeur is in over 180 cities and on every continent but Antarctica. We’ve published a quarterly magazine since 2017, created a podcast to dive deeper into our community of thought leaders, and worked with brands like JetBlue Airways, Lyft, Nike, and Match.com to create campaigns that use our vision to help their ideas come to life. We believe that a commitment to what’s local and authentic allows us to reach our audience in a way that feels both dependable and sustainable, whether that’s independently or through a collab. And while the work never really stops, we have fun wherever we go.
