Young Henrys
Venture onto the back streets of Newtown and you will find this grungy brewery in a warehouse setting that makes you feel like you’re in someone’s cool, fully pimped-out garage. Mingle with the friendly locals and try their signature and seasonal ales on tap (they also make good cloudy cider). I highly recommend getting their tasting paddle if it’s your first time, and do try the “Newtowner”, it’s an Aussie Pale Ale made with three local hops which celebrates 150 years of Newtown. It’s crisp, flirty, fruity and a tad bitter… very uniquely Newton.
Bread & Circus
If you want a yummy, wholesome breakfast in a hipster, ex-industrial space (and don’t mind paying a bit extra), then you must visit Bread & Circus in Alexandria. They have the most idyllic décor with a lovely pink colour scheme, woven baskets, and fresh vegetables everywhere. They’re also very popular among the locals, so come early to avoid the queue. If you do have to wait for a table, however, the sociable staff and the scrumptious sustenance will definitely make the meal worth the wait.
Palmer & Co.
Come here if you’re after some delicious bar food with a 1920’s prohibition-era ambience. It’s not very vegetarian friendly but their olives are amazing and they have German pretzels. I normally end up with a cocktail or two here, usually off the menu (just ask the bartender to make something special for you, giving him hints on what you like to drink). The cocktail is, almost always, spectacular! They open until 3 a.m., so there’s plenty of time for you to recover from the cocktails.
Observatory Hill Park
The view at this lovely park is worth the climb. It’s a popular spot for wedding photos (and weddings!) with a great view of the inner harbour and Sydney city. Come here in the morning or in the afternoon to watch the sunrise or sunset. It’s magical.
Sydney is definitely on the cool and collected side, but by no means boring. It has everything you could ask for, and knows it doesn’t need to try too hard to stand out from the crowd. There’s culture and diversity here, which brings with it a certain energy that makes life in Sydney so enjoyable! From the beaches and mountains that encapsulate the city to the hipster suburbs – and, of course, the beautiful harbour – Sydney will always bring a smile to your face.
